It is the tool you reach for when the cut has to happen in place rather than at a bench.

Applications include cutting through timber studwork and joists during strip-out, cutting nail-embedded timber that would ruin a circular saw blade, cutting metal pipe, conduit and light section, cutting plasterboard and partitions, flush-cutting fixings and protruding bolts, pruning branches, and cutting through composite materials during dismantling.

The blade does all the work of specialising the tool. A coarse wood blade cuts framing timber fast; a bi-metal demolition blade survives hidden nails and screws; a fine metal blade handles pipe and conduit. Blade length matters too — a longer blade reaches further but flexes and wanders, so use the shortest blade that will complete the cut.

Practical technique: keep the shoe pressed firmly against the workpiece. Letting the shoe lift is what causes the violent juddering people associate with these saws, and it snaps blades. Start slowly until the blade has bitten, then bring the speed up.

Always check what is behind and inside what you are cutting. The blade projects well beyond the cut, and in strip-out work live cables and pipes are exactly where you least expect them.
