Bench Grinders in Sri Lanka

New Lanka Tools stocks 9 bench grinders. A bench grinder is a fixed workshop machine with a wheel at each end — you bring the work to the tool rather than the tool to the work, which is what makes it accurate enough for sharpening and shaping.

Bosch leads with 3 machines, followed by Makita with 2, GAOCHENG with 2 and Stanley. The range covers common wheel diameters for general workshop use, and includes machines suited to both grinding and buffing depending on the wheels fitted.

Metal fabrication shops, machine shops, agricultural and plantation workshops, vehicle repairers, carpenters sharpening chisels and plane irons, and tool rooms all keep a bench grinder. It is one of the few tools that pays for itself simply by keeping other tools sharp.

Applications include sharpening drill bits, chisels, plane irons and lathe tools, sharpening garden tools such as mower blades, shears and mamoties, deburring and dressing cut metal edges, shaping and profiling small steel parts, removing rust and scale, and — with a wire wheel or buffing wheel fitted — cleaning and polishing.

A few points that make the difference between a useful machine and a frustrating one. Bolt it down; an unsecured bench grinder walks across the bench and cannot be used accurately. Keep the tool rest adjusted close to the wheel, ideally within a couple of millimetres, since a wide gap can catch the workpiece and drag it in. Dress the wheel when it glazes rather than pressing harder. And keep a water pot beside the machine when sharpening — overheating a chisel edge ruins its temper, and the tool never holds an edge properly again.

Eye protection is essential with a bench grinder even when the machine has screens fitted; our Safety Equipment department covers it.
