Civil works and road contractors, drainage and utility crews, demolition contractors, and builders forming openings in slabs and walls use these machines. Cutting a clean line before breaking makes the break far tidier and protects the concrete that is staying.

Applications include cutting expansion and control joints in slabs, cutting openings in concrete floors for drainage and services, trenching through paving and asphalt for utilities, cutting out damaged sections of road or pavement for repair, and scoring a clean edge before demolition work begins.

Depth of cut is the specification that matters. A machine’s blade diameter sets its maximum depth, and cutting a 200mm slab through in one pass needs a considerably larger machine than scoring a surface joint. Cutting from both sides is often the practical answer on thicker slabs.

Wet cutting is strongly preferable wherever the site allows. Water cools the diamond blade, extends its life substantially, and — more importantly — suppresses the silica dust that dry cutting concrete throws out in large quantities. Silica exposure is a serious long-term health risk, so where dry cutting is unavoidable, proper respiratory protection is essential rather than advisable. Before cutting into any slab, establish what is inside it. Cutting through post-tensioned tendons or a live service is a serious matter, and a cable or rebar scanner is worth the delay.
