Carpenters and joiners, door and window fitters, furniture makers, formwork carpenters, and site builders working with rough sawn timber all use planers. Hanging a door that binds in its frame is the classic job — a planer takes the edge down in minutes where a hand plane would take considerably longer.

Applications include trimming door edges to fit a frame, straightening and squaring the edges of boards, reducing timber thickness, removing twist and cup from rough stock, chamfering and bevelling edges, and cleaning up sawn faces before sanding and finishing.

Depth setting is where most of the skill sits. Take light passes — a fraction of a millimetre at a time gives a clean surface and an accurate result, while a heavy cut tears the grain and bogs the motor. Start the cut with pressure on the front shoe and finish with pressure on the rear shoe; that is what prevents the dipped ends that give away an inexperienced user.

Read the grain direction before you start. Planing against the grain tears the surface no matter how sharp the blades are, and on figured timber it is worth taking very light passes in whichever direction tears least.

Blades are consumable and dull steadily, faster in hardwood and much faster in reclaimed timber where hidden grit and nails are a risk. A planer with reversible blades is worth having.
