Variable temperature and variable airflow are the features worth having, since the difference between shrinking a sleeve and scorching a surface is often only a few tens of degrees.

Electricians shrinking heat-shrink sleeving and terminations, plumbers thawing and bending pipe, painters and decorators stripping old paint, vehicle repairers working with trim, vinyl and adhesive, packaging operations shrink-wrapping, and floor layers softening vinyl and adhesive all use heat guns regularly.

Applications include stripping paint and varnish from timber and metal, shrinking heat-shrink tubing and cable sleeving, softening and shaping plastics and PVC, freeing seized fixings by heating the surrounding metal, thawing frozen pipe, drying damp surfaces before finishing, softening adhesives and vinyl for removal, and welding or forming thermoplastic sheet.

Two practical cautions. A heat gun will set materials alight — the air leaving the nozzle is far hotter than most users assume, and paint stripping near timber, fabric or old insulation needs constant attention.
